LO1 P1 - Understand how sound elements are used across media industries unit 16

How sound elements are used crossed media industry:

Educate: (radio)

When looking at how sounds are used to educate an audience, they'll use multiple different sound elements to keep the audience engage and get their point shared to the audience. An example of where sound elements are used to educate an audience is "World of secrets" on BBC World service which educates the audience on how the world manipulates people and the secrets. They use sounds when someone is talking and speaking about their experiences they'll add sound effects to make people feel like they're there with the person talking about it. E.G at episode Sin no more at 11:39 it has a build up of tension and educates people about how nerve racking it can be when you sin.

Entertain: (animated film)

When looking at how sounds are used to entertain an audience it'll be created for many different intentions. They are mainly used to interact with the audience and make them laugh which makes them excited which makes them want to watch more. This is used in Shrek. The film Shrek has many sounds used to attract the audience to watch the film. For an example in the trailer donkey says "you definitely need tik tacs or something cause your breath STINKS!" this entertains the audience and makes them laugh. The music in the background when he says that is fast beat to suit the vibe of Shrek to attract the audience and its target audience.

Inform: (radio)

When looking at how sound elements are used to inform they'll be used for different intentions. The purpose to use sound is to make it more serious and bring awareness to that topic. On BBC news on the TV it has a time placement for weather. Seen in the video above there are no sound effects used however just the woman talking about the weather. This is so that the audience is able to engage with the woman as she informs us with the weather with no distractions. There may be a horrible day with horrible weather. They would want the audience to engage so that they’ll be informed with this important information.

Sell Products: (TV Advert)

When selling products sound elements are used to make it more enjoyable for the audience. This is a TV advert to promote the new launch of BSY makeup. The audio has the famous k-pop group ENHYPEN doing a voice over on how flawless the makeup is saying "Play lively, or play gently". This speaks about how thew makeup will not rub off. With each line each member says it has a scene of them with the makeup on which enhances the visuals since they're performers and the makeup has lasted long. This would make the audience want to purchase the makeup due to it being long lasting.

Wild Tracks:

Wild tracks is used as a sound element to synchronised the recording on top of the sound effect. Near the beginning of the trailer from 0:20 to 0:27 we can see that they have utilised the weather effects as well as mechanical sounds. When the characters jump down, we can clearly hear the loud wind thrashing against them and ringing in their ears from the high altitude that they had just come from. Furthermore, when it goes into the first person perspective of the character, they utilise mechanical sounds to show how the equipment is working automatically without the control of a human being. This creates tension and suspense within the audience as it shows technological futurism especially since this was made in early 2014. It also creates a realistic feel of what it would be like to wear what the character is wearing.

Atmospheric sounds:

Atmospheric sounds are used to create an environment in which the producer wants the audience to feel. At the beginning of the tv advert 00:00 we can see how there are sounds of a countryside being used to emphasise the sounds of how nobody is around at the start of the advert. This is used to build up tension in the advert and highlight a certain part of the scene which was the ninja’s being sneaky. It makes it stand out and question the readers how they managed to sneakily get past the guards.

Sound effects: (Computer Games)

Sound effects are used to create a feeling for the audience, feeling like they're actually there. For computer games sound effects need to be made by scratch to fit the movements of the characters. This will enhance the audience of reality. In the video above it shows how sound effects are made for the computer game "Genshin Impact". At 0:27 we can see how the sound effect of the wind glider flying is made by using a blanket and layering the two sound together. Such a simple sound is used to imitate flying.

Dialogue:

Dialogue is used to help the audience know what is going on since it's a type of speech. It can be used by two people talking, or more or even one. In the video above we can see that in avatar the last Airbender Katara is giving dialogue to the audience (seen at 0:20) on what the programme is about and summing up what has happened in the past episodes. This helps the audience to gain an understanding on what is going on and refresh their memory.

Music/How it enhances visuals:

With music it's able to enhance visuals giving the audience an idea of the whole storyline, what's about to happen, the characters personality which allows them to feel emotions. For an example the live action of one piece we are able to see how Arlong arrives (at 0:22), the music starts playing which gives the audience an idea on how Arlong is. This enhances Arlong being spooky with an upbeat spooky song, this also enhances other features of this scene (when Buggy is being held hostage).

Use of silences:

Uses of science may be used to emphasis a specific part of to create a tension feeling for the audience. Towards the middle of the movie trailer at 0:42 to 0:56 they utilise silence. Silence is the theme throughout the entirety of the move and they managed to do an amazing job at it. The reason it works so well is because it creates that thrilling sensation of suspense within the audience who are watching, making it really enjoyable for them to carry on to see what happens next.
